Malaysian VDR Application Closing Soon
VDR application submission ends on 31 March 2024
Attention all employers! The Malaysian Immigration Department has announced that the Visa with Reference (VDR) application process will be closing on April 1st, 2024. If you’ve been considering or in the process of applying for a VDR for your foreign workers, it’s crucial to take note of this deadline.
What does this mean for employers? If you’re still preparing for the VDR application, you must ensure that all necessary documents are submitted and processed before March 31. It’s essential to stay updated with the latest requirements and guidelines provided by the Malaysian authorities to avoid any delays or complications in your application process.
Moreover, for those who have already received VDR approval for their foreign workers, there’s an additional important date to keep in mind. According to the recent announcement, individuals with approved VDRs must enter Malaysia on or before May 2024. This means you have a limited window to finalize deployment plans and make arrangements to welcome workers into the country within the specified timeframe.
Why is this deadline significant? The closure of the VDR application signifies a shift in immigration policies or procedures by the Malaysian government. As such, it’s crucial for foreign workers and individuals intending to work in Malaysia to adhere to these deadlines to avoid any potential issues with their immigration status or employment arrangements.
Failure to comply with these deadlines could result in complications such as visa rejections, deportation, or legal repercussions. Therefore, it’s imperative to act promptly and ensure that all necessary steps are taken to meet the deadlines set by the Malaysian authorities.

Program Repatriasi Migran
A Crucial Malaysian Initiative
The ongoing Program Repatriasi Migran or Foreign Migrant Repatriation Program has once again brought to light a key importance of managing the influx of foreign workers for the benefit of our country’s socio-economic stability. With a significant presence of foreign laborers, primarily from neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal, Malaysia faces the challenge of regulating this workforce effectively.
The program, spearheaded by the Malaysian government in collaboration with relevant agencies, has simplified the procedures for foreign migrants to return home. Firstly, the migrants can now secure a trip back to their home country by purchasing a return ticket and proceed to book an appointment online at the Immigration Enforcement Department office to present their original passport and travel documents. One thing to note is that the return flight date must not be more than 14 days from the date of appointment at the immigration enforcement office.
According to the Malaysian Immigration Department, this program – that begins from 1st March until 31 December 2024 – is implemented to allow illegal foreign migrants who have overstayed on their permits, entered the country illegally or violated the terms of their entry passes to return home voluntarily. To ease the process even further, the payment of fines can now be made via debit and credit cards, as well as Touch’n Go eWallet. However, the compound will be subject to the type of offence committed.
By regulating the outflow of foreign workers, the program contributes to maintaining a balanced labor market, preventing labor shortages in critical sectors while also addressing concerns of unemployment among Malaysian citizens. The program also helps to prioritise foreign workers’ welfare and ensure humane treatment throughout the repatriation process in order to reflect Malaysia’s commitment to upholding international standards of human rights and labor rights.
Additionally, the program underscores the importance of bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and neighboring countries. Through diplomatic channels and agreements, both parties work collaboratively to ensure the smooth repatriation of foreign migrants and address underlying issues such as human trafficking and exploitation.
Overall, the Program Repatriasi Migran serves as a cornerstone in the nation’s immigration and labor policies. By promoting legality, welfare, and bilateral cooperation, Malaysia can more effectively manage the presence of foreign workers while upholding the dignity and rights of all individuals involved.
